Fill Up on Corn if You Can - New York Times

Fill Up on Corn if You Can - New York Times

The headline is very misleading. It seems that the Times is almost supporting the use of Ethanol! However, the article is a great look at ethanol and some of the basic economics at the heart of the program.

It notes that ethanol provides about 75% of energy per gallon of gasoline. So, if you want to buy ethanol economically, you need to pay at least 25% less for ethanol at the pump. However, if you're a taxpayer, you might consider the added costs of the subsidies on corn, ethanol production, and certain state subsidies of retailers. Ethanol may just cost too much to make.
